Sheriffs' bills for feeding prisoners, 1926-1941.

County sheriffs received an allowance from the State for feeding prisoners in the county jails. To receive the allowance, which was proportionate to the number of meals served, the sheriff was required to submit a monthly itemized statement to the Court of County Commissioners or the Board of Revenue, to the State Auditor, and to the State Prison Inspector. The statement lists the amount of money actually spent for purchasing and supplying all foodstuffs for feeding prisoners; a list of all prisoners by name, race, and sex; the offense charged; the authority for committing to jail; the disposition of the prisoner; date and length of sentence; date of discharge; number of days in jail; and the sheriffs' allowance for the number of meals served (Ala. Code, T-14, Sec. 146-7, 1940). Many feed bills include an itemized statement of foodstuffs served during the month. Listed are each type of foodstuff, amount served, price per serving, and actual cost of entire amount. Attached to each bill is a statement of verification signed by the circuit clerk and an affidavit sworn by the sheriff before the probate judge. These records were also created by the Board of Administration (1923-1939).
